Senior Accountant

Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will be comfortable performing various duties related to all aspects of the accounting cycle including, financial reporting to management and corporate stakeholders. As well, the Senior Accountant will assist in supervising accounting staff and help to provide oversight on corporate financial compliance, policies and procedures. This position will facilitate any auditing conducted by third parties to ensure effective resolution and swift closure of auditing activities. This role will also ensure the company utilizes ethical accounting practices and standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

General

• Prepare and maintain asset, liability, and capital account entries by collecting, interpreting, compiling, reconciling, analyzing and entering accounting information
• Maintain an accurate and complete trail of supporting documentation for all activities
• Coordinate financial activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general accounting, payroll, special projects accounting, financial planning, and reporting
• Deploy measures to resolve variances in budgets, reporting, and internal controls, as requested
• Provide general counsel, advice, and guidance on business and financial matters as required
• Recommend financial actions by analyzing accounting options
• Improve systems and procedures and initiate corrective actions
• Guide accounting and office staff by coordinating activities and answering questions
• Liaise with auditors, bankers, funders, insurance and benefit representatives, clients, vendors and other stakeholders as necessary
• Organize filing of all appropriate documents
• Translate strategic goals into practical actions
• Monitor strategic performance metrics and targets that are consistent with company goals
• Report any and all inconsistencies in corporate strategy in order to improve financial performance and adjust company policy accordingly

Financial Reporting

• Ensure that all month-end financial duties and resulting financial reporting is completed in a timely and accurate manner
• Compile and present reports, budgets, business plans, commentaries and financial statements as required
• Advise on the content and accuracy of financial reporting

Payroll

• Process payroll in an accurate and timely manner
• Administer and reconcile benefits statements
• Compile payroll data such as garnishments, vacation time, insurance, and other deductions
• Prepare, reconcile and submit monthly remittances

Auditing

• Maintain year-end working papers and spreadsheets, and assist with preparation for any internal or external audits or independent reviews being conducted
• Take responsibility for certain aspects of the audit function in the organization and develop auditing techniques to meet changing needs
• Facilitate any auditing conducted by third parties to ensure effective resolution and swift closure of auditing activities

Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable

• Liaise with vendors and clients regarding billing or payment issues
• Check for accuracy, process and enter invoices for payment
• Process, code, enter, verify, and reconcile transactions such as accounts payable and receivable, cheques, invoices and bank statements

Internal Control

• Recommend, establish and monitor both accounting and administrative internal controls to ensure that finance activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory and company policies and procedures
• Ensure organization utilizes ethical accounting practices and standards
